Description from Goodreads:

A captivating exploration of how a family gets a farm ready for the snow of winter,¬†Sleep Tight Farm¬†lyrically connects each growing season to the preparations at the very end of the farm year. This beautiful and informative book paints a fascinating picture of what winter means to the farm year and to the family that shares its seasons, from spring’s new growth, summer’s heat, and fall’s bounty to winter’s well-earned rest. All year long the farm has worked to shelter us, feed us, keep us warm, and now it’s time to sleep.

What I Thought:

I love picture books that are informative without being stiff, and Sleep Tight Farm is the perfect example of that.

Sleep Tight Farm takes us through the process of tucking in a farm for the winter. From scattering straw over strawberries to stacking wood and storing tractors, everything is laid out in a practical and beautiful way.

The story shows us both what the purpose of the tasks being performed before winter is, and also glimpses of the active time on the farm of the spring and summer.

This book would be perfect for a unit on food and farming. It has an enchantingly muted colour scheme, and provides ample opportunity for children to ask questions. The nostalgic style of the illustrations adds an understated elegance to the story. On each page we say goodnight to another part of the farm, which pulls the entire book together wonderfully. And of course we can’t forget to say goodnight to the farmers, as well.

I even learned a thing or two – I had no idea that you needed to make the beehive entrances smaller so cold little field mice don’t get in! So fascinating!

At the back of the book it states that Eugenie Doyle actually lives and works on an organic farm in Vermont! Check out their website here:
