Title: Don’t Blink
Author and Illustrator: Tom Booth
Rating: 8.5
Source: Raincoast Books for review

Description from Goodreads:

Think you can win a staring contest against an elephant? What about a gorilla, a cheetah, a fox, or an alligator? What about all them AND a bunch of their other animal friends at the same time? You’re about to find out!

Whatever you do DON’T BLINK!

What I Thought:

This giggle-inducing book is a huge hit in our house! My daughter even tried the whole prop-your-eyes-open-with-your-fingers thing. She did her darndest but in the end, the turtle won.

The illustrations are wonderful, with crisp cartoony characters on a muted background. They almost remind me of Disney, with the enormous cute eyes and expressive faces. I also loved that each creature’s text was colour coordinated, so we could easily tell which animal was speaking. It also helps when trying to come up with a dozen different voices!

The slow, patient turtle is adorable, with each other animal rushing across the page to participate while the turtle plods along. (Spoiler: she makes it across in the end!)

Don’t Blink was a wonderful read aloud! And sparked some seriously fun staring contests of our own!

TL;DR:

Just don’t blink!
