Title: Big Bunny
Author and Illustrator: Rowboat Watkins
Rating: 8
Source: Raincoast Books for review

Description from Amazon:

Once upon a time there was a book about . . .
Nope . . . a BUNNY!
Um . . . well, maybe it was a tiny bit big.

From the curious mind of Rowboat Watkins comes a ginormously imaginative story that is as funny as it is philosophical. How big is Big Bunny? And how will this story end? Delightfully meta and humorously subversive, Big Bunny will take its place as the next go-to story about stories.

What I Thought:

Rowboat Watkins’ books are as quirky and fun as his pen name.

This book *tries* to tell a fairly normal story, but with constant interruptions from a little helper it gets quickly and absurdly off-track. Since I have an extremely by-the-book child and a very happy-go-lucky child they are both perfectly content to have the story read to them verbatim. But I *have* read some sorta-lame books (present company excluded) and spiced them up a little. So I can relate 🙂

As usual the illustrations are adorably weird, and the sketchy water colour-y palate is lovely. Watkins’ distinctive characters are total winners in this adorable story.

I think my favourite part of the book was the narrator reveal at the end – didn’t see that one coming! I also love when books have hints of the story scattered throughout the last page of a book – Watkins does this perfectly.

What E Thought:

I thought this was awesome because there’s a ginormous bunny! On a ginormous carrot! The pictures were so funny. I thought it was funny when they were talking about all that nonsense.
